The department responds to approximately 750,000 fire and EMS calls each year. The Chicago Fire Department is credited with inventing the firehouse pole that became a standard in two store firehouses, and the first snorkel used in firefighting in the U.S. Chicago is one of the largest departments to fully operate its own ambulance system with 80 full-time ALS rigs with two fully licensed paramedics per rig. The department operates multiple fireboats and helicopters as part of its frontline fleet.
