The Sproat Lake Fire Department in Port Alberni, British Columbia, was established in 1965. With its 44 volunteer firefighters and three stations, the department responds to about 140 incidents each year, covering a population of 1,600 across 60 square miles. In 1967 the Powder Puff Brigade was organized by women of the community to fight fires during the day while most men were working in the woods.
