As the nation’s first public fire department, the Boston Fire Department was established as the nation’s first public fire department in 1678. With 1600 career firefighters and 34 fire stations, the department responds to 80,000 incidents each years across 49 square miles for a population of 750,000. The City of Boston passed its first fire prevention ordinance in 1631, banning thatched roofs and wooden chimneys.
